While patients and healthcare professionals are the end users of digital health technologies, it's important to consider the role of digital health companies in building the eco-system to facilitate the sharing of data between devices, healthcare providers and internally between companies themselves.
Interoperability refers to "the ability of computer systems or software to exchange and make use of information".
By focusing on interoperability, digital health companies are creating the foundational layer with which new and existing digital health technologies can connect, share data and grow for the benefit of patients, healthcare professionals and the wider ecosystem.
A good example in the diabetes space is the interoperability of medical devices such as BGMs, Mobile Health apps and data management systems used in clinical practice. This interoperability is what facilitates the seamless sharing of data from a patient's glucose monitor to their mobile health app and then onwards into the data management system used by healthcare professionals in a particular practice.
By allowing the seamless transfer of data, both people living with diabetes and healthcare professionals have instant visibility into how a particular person is managing their diabetes at any given time, in the format which is most practical for them.
